baby3.JPGBaby was given to me by my ex-wife Lisa for my birthday in 1998. She was about eight weeks old at the time so this makes her birthday roughly Aug. 2, 1998. Her real name is actually “Babe,” named after Oliver “Babe” Hardy, but we’ve always called her Baby for short, despite having more syllables. Lisa and I were not actually married yet and were still living at the Peppertree Apartments in Fairborn. Although, we had been making plans to build a house elsewhere in Fairborn, it was still nearly a year before we would be moving.

I loved Baby. She was one of the friendliest, sweetest kittens you could hope for. But I did question why Lisa gave her to me at this time since our apartment complex didn’t allow pets. In fact, we had given up our other cat Stymie so we could move into these apartments! But nevertheless, we kept Baby in our apartment with only one landlord incident.

baby1.JPGJust one month before we were ready to move, the landlord served notice that we would have to either get rid of the cat or pay an exorbitant fee to keep her there. I attempted to circumvent the issue by having Baby stay at my Dad’s for a month. Being the tender-hearted and ornery feline that she is, Baby would have none of that.

For one solid week she hid in his basement, went on a hunger strike, and refused to be consoled. After a week, I had no choice to bring her back to the apartment. The ride home was ridiculous. Baby was dead weight in my lap, but the minute I let her loose in the apartment, she sprang to life like nothing had ever happened. We ignored the landlord and a month later we had packed up and moved away from there without incident.

baby2.JPGBaby seemed to feel the same way about the new house as she did my Dad’s house - for a day or two. But since we were with her and all of the familiar furniture seemed to follow us, she slowly snapped out of it.

Baby loves to play and be held. She has been a loud and enthusiastic purrer since she was a tiny kitten. In fact, this is why Lisa picked her from all the other cats at the pet store. Like all cats, she can be full of mischief and will instigate fights with Ashleigh, Tiny, and me. She was always closest to Carolyn and would curl up on her lap the minute she sat down, but Baby rarely does this with anyone else. However, if Baby is picked up, she will sprawl herself over the shoulder, begin purring, and await a backscratching.

As I write this, Baby is nearby taking a much-deserved nap on the back of the couch, one of her current favorite spots. Always healthy, vibrant, and well-groomed, Baby has been the ideal cat and is certainly considered a cherished member of the family.

  1. A very nice site, regardless of what others say. But what’s with the links that require a password? Is that where you keep the naughty bits? Y’know, I have a program that will allow me to do stuff like this, but I fear it would be either boring or hideously inflammatory…

    Best regards,

    Geo.

PS: My party is at 5:30, if you can come.

  2. This is the only cat I’ve ever had a serious conversation with, although it was a bit one sided.
